Teeblogi: Taas Upton tee, josta en onnistunut löytämään mitään tietoa ja jota kukaan muu ei tunnu myyvän. Lisäksi Yin Miao Cui on vielä tällä hetkellä myyty loppuun Uptonilla, joten jos heille ei tule lisää, niin en tiedä mistä tätä teetä saa. Lehdet ovat harmaanvihreitä ja rullattu ohuiksi. Juoma on hyvin kalpean väristä ja siinä on mielenkiintoinen tuoksu, josta tuli mieleen keitetty pinaatti hienoisella makealla sivuvivahteella. Upton suosittelee 1+ teelusikkaa lehtiä per kuppi ja kolmen minuutin haudutusaikaa, jolloin myös teen maussa oli hallitsevana keitetty pinaatti. Minun mielestäni parhaat tulokset tulivat kahdella teelusikalla teelehtiä per kuppi ja neljän minuutin haudutuksella, jolloin maku syveni ja monipuolistui ja siihen tuli lisäksi myös pähkinämaisia vivahteita. Itse asiassa Yin Miao Cui kestää hyvin ylihauduttamista – unohdin lehdet kerrat hautumaan yli viideksi minuutiksi ja maku oli edelleen hyvä. Tämä on hyvin pehmeä ja pyöreä vihreä tee, josta puuttuu kirpakkuus lähes kokonaan.

Teeblogi says: Another Upton tea I couldn’t find any info elsewhere and nobody else is selling. Also, Upton has currently sold out its stock so unless they get more this review will be for reference purpose only. The leaves have a greyish green colour. The liquid has a very pale colour and an interesting aroma that reminded me of boiled spinach or greens with slightly sweet undertones. Upton recommends 1+ tsp leaves per cup and 3 min steeping time, which produced tea that had the boiled spinach/greens as the main taste element. I think it’s better to use 2 tsp leaves and steep for 4 minutes which gives a deeper and more complex flavour and adds a lovely nuttiness to the overall picture. Actually Yin Miao Cui handles oversteeping quite well – I once forget the leaves for five plus minutes and the taste was still fine. All in all, this is a very soft and smooth tasting green tea with practically no astringency.

Teeblogi: Gunpowder on luultavasti tunnetuin ja helpoimmin saatavilla oleva kiinalainen vihreä tee lännessä. Ainakin itse yhdistän Gunpowderin maun niin tiivisti vihreään teehen, että ne olivat minulle pitkään yksi ja sama asia. Mikä ei ole ollenkaan huono asia, sillä satun pitämään Gunpowderista. Teen nimessä oleva Pinhead (=neulanpää) tarkoittaa, että lehdet ovat kääritty tiivisti pienelle rullalle. Lehdet ovat tummia ja kiiltävät hienosti. Niitä katsellessa ymmärtää helposti, että Gunpowderia kutsuttiin alunperin helmiteeksi. Lehdet ovat tässä teessä itse asiassa niin tiukasti rullalla, että ne eivät ehtineet kunnolla avautua ensimmäisessä haudutuksessa, joka jäikin  maultaan aika miedoksi. Toisessa haudutuksessa olivat kaikki lehdet jo kunnolla avautuneet ja teen ominaismaku tuli paremmin esiin. Gunpowderissa on kirpeä maku, joka on minusta oikein miellyttävä. Tämä on melko voimakkaanmakuinen vihreä tee, jossa on täyteläinen, hiukan mukavan hapan makuvivahde ja pitkä jälkimaku. Tee maistui erittäin raikkaalle ja tuoreelle. Gunpowder Pinhead on oikein nautittavaa ja sopii erinomaisesti “yleisvihreäksi” – laatu on hintaan nähden loistava.

Teeblogi says: Gunpowder is probably the most famous and readily available Chinese green tea in the West. Personally I connect the Gunpowder taste so closely with green tea that the two were inseparable for a long time, which is not a bad thing because I happen quite like Gunpowder. The word Pinhead in the name means that the leaves are tighly rolled into small pellets. The leaves are dark and shine nicely. When you look at them you understand why Gunpowder was originally called Pearl Tea. Actually the leaves are rolled so tighly they didn’t have time to properly open up in the first steeping, which showed in the surprisingly mild taste. In the second steeping all the leaves opened up and the characteristic Gunpowder taste was more apparent. Gunpowder has a sharp taste, which I find pleasant. It is a fairly strong green tea with a full-bodied, slightly sour flavour and a long aftertaste. This feels very refreshing and fresh (as in newly picked/produced). Gunpowder Pinhead is very enjoyable and well suited as an “everyday green”. Excellent price-quality ratio.

Teeblogi: Mustat teet ovat lähes täysin hallinneet blogia tähän asti, mutta koska ideana on kirjoittaa muistakin teelaaduista niin täytyy antaa myös tilaa vihreille ja oolongeille (sen sijaan valkoiset ja keltaiset teelaadut ovat näillä näkymin jäämässä pois). Ensimmäisenä vuorossa on kiinalainen vihreä tee Young Hyson, joka on aikaisemmin arvostellun Gu Zhang Mao Jianin tavoin luomutuotantoa (unohdin mainita sen Mao Jianin kohdalla. Laitoin luomun myös omaksi kategoriakseen sivupalkin aiheissa). Lehdet ovat kierrettyjä enkä erottanut niissä oikein minkäänlaista tuoksua. Teestä tuli hailakan vihreänkeltaista ja siinä oli mieto ruohomainen tuoksu. Näin varovaisen alun jälkeen itse maku oli yllättävän täyteläinen, mutta samalla kumminkin hyvin pehmeä ja kevyt. Jälkimaku on pitkä ja hieman makea. Toisessa haudutuksessa oli voimakkaampi maku, mutta en oikein jaksa innostua Young Hysonista. Tämä on minulle liian kevyttä – pidän enemmän vähän reippaammasta ja vahvemman makuisesta vihreästä teestä. Lisäpisteitä kumminkin luomusta ja eikä hintakaan ole paha.

Teeblogi says: So far this blog has been almost entirely about black teas but the idea is to write about other teas as well so it’s time to give more attention to greens and oolongs (white and yellow teas, on the other hand, are not going to be featured in Teeblogi for now). First up is the Chinese green tea Young Hyson which is (like the earlier reviewed Gu Zhang Mao Jian) organic. The leaves are rolled and I could not sense any particular smell in them. The tea has a pale yellow-green colour and a slight grassy aroma. After such a delicate start the taste was surprisingly full-bodied, yet very smooth and light. The after taste was long and sweetish. The second infusion produced a stronger flavour but I am not getting too excited about Young Hyson. It’s simply too light – I like my greens a bit more robust. Plus points though that it’s organic and fairly cheap.

Upton Tea Imports: “Exceptional quality and flavor. A green tea with deep flavor notes and deep body”, $1.50/15g, $8.80/125g…$57.20/kg

Teeblogi: Tämä kiinalainen vihreä tee on oikein mielenkiintoinen tuttavuus. Lehdissä on hieno harmahtava väri ja makea, hedelmäinen tuoksu. Juoma on hailakan kultaista tai vihreää (tosin vihreä kuppini sai ehkä teen näyttämään vihreämmältä kuin se itse asiassa on…). Lehdistä saa helposti kolme haudutusta, jotka kaikki poikkesivat toisistaan. Ensimmäisessä korostui hedelmäisyys – tuoksu oli lähes rypälemäinen (tuli mieleen valkoviini) ja myös maku oli erittäin makea ja hedelmäinen, erityisesti persikka-aromit korostuivat -  ei minkäänlaista kitkeryyttä. En ole koskaan aikaisemmin juonut teetä, joka on luonnostaan näin makeaa. Toisessa haudutuksessa tuli esiin teen maku paljon selvemmin ja hedelmäisyys ei enää dominoinut. Tämä oli mielestäni paras haudutus – erittäin hieno ja monivivahteinen sekoitus teen luontaista kitkeryyttä ja hedelmäaromien makeutta. Nyt tuli esiin myös miellyttävä ja raikas jälkimaku. Kolmas haudutus oli kaikista miedoin – nyt hedelmät olivat kokonaan poissa ja jäljellä oli vain mieto vihreän teen maku. Tämä haudutus oli parhaimmillaan hieman jäähtyneenä, toisin kuin ensimmäinen haudutus, joka oli miellyttävintä kuumana. Tämä oli ensimmäinen “hieno” vihreä teeni – yleensäkin juon lähinnä mustaa teetä, mutta tämän perusteella kyllä odotan innolla tutustumista muihin laatuihin. Ja lopuksi, jos joku ihmetteli: en välttämättä juo vihreää teetä aina vihreästä kupista…

Teeblogi says: A very interesting Chinese green tea. The leaves have a beautiful greyish colour and sweet, fruity smell. The infusion has a light golden/green colour (although maybe my green mug made it look more green than it actually is…). This tea gives you easily three steepings – each with their own individual character. The first one was very fruity. The tea had a sweet smell, which made made me think of grapes and white wine. Also the flavour was very sweet and fruity, plenty of peach notes here and no bitterness at all. This is the naturally most sweet tea I’ve ever tasted – the first infusion really was incredibly sweet. The second infusion had more “tea-taste” and the fruits were not playing the main part anymore. This was my favourite infusion – a beautiful and complex mixture of the natural astringency of tea and sweetness of the fruit notes. There was also a clean and fresh aftertaste. The third infusion was the mildest – the fruit was gone and the liquid had only a mild green tea taste, which improved when the tea had cooled down quite a bit. The first infusion was exactly the opposite – I liked it better when it was hot. This was my first “fine” green tea – I usually drink black tea but based on this I’m looking forward to trying other green teas. And finally, in case somebody is wondering – no, I don’t always drink green tea from a green mug….
