Théhuone: “Castletonin tarha tuottaa yhtä hienoimmista toisen poiminnan darjeeling-laaduista, joka tunnetaan herkullisesta muscatellin vivahteestaan”, 4.50 €/60g, 7.50 €/100g (75 €/kg)

Teeblogi: Darjeeling-kuukausi on edennyt nyt toisen satokauden teelaatuihin. Ne poimitaan touko-kesäkuussa ja ovat väriltään tummempia ja maultaan voimakkaampia kuin ensipoiminnan laadut – samoin darjeelingeille tyypilliset muskatellivivahteet ovat selvemmin esillä tässä poiminnassa. Eron huomaa myös lehdissä – toisen poiminnan lehdet ovat selvästi tummempia ja varttuneempiä eivätkä enää niin vihreitä ja hentoja (tämä Castleton on lehtiluokitukseltaan astetta pari alhaisempi kuin aikaisemmin käsitellyt kevätsadon laadut, mikä luultavasti vielä korostaa eroa). Lehdet tuoksuvat myös paljon miedommin, tosin tämä tee on viime vuoden satoa. En tiedä johtuuko tuoksun mietous siitä vai liittykö se satokauteen. Kolmen minuutin haudutus tuotti kuparinvärisen juoman, jossa on jälleen yllättävän mieto tuoksu. Maku on huomattavasti “kypsempi” verrattuna ensipoimintaan, tässä alkaa selvästi myös maistua ihan musta tee. Hedelmäisyys tulee paremmin esille kun antaa juoman jäähtyä pari minuuttia. Castleton on minusta oikein mainio yhdistelmä voimakkuutta ja rypälemäistä elävyyttä ja raikkautta, tosin muskatelli ei ole tässä erityisen korostunut vaan pikemminkin mukana tosiaan lähinnä vivahteena. Maku on myös yllättävän voimakasrunkoinen ja kestää jopa tilkan maitoa, joka mielestäni korostaa mukavasti sen hedelmäisyyttä. Ei hullumpaa ollenkaan!

Teeblogi says: Darjeeling month marches on to the second flush teas. They are harvested in May-June and are stronger in colour and taste than the first flush teas. It is also during this harvest when muscatel flavours typical to darjeelings are at their most pronounced. There is also a clear difference when you look at the leaves (although this Castleton has a leaf grading lower than the previous first flush teas which probably emphasises the difference) – these look clearly darker and more mature and less greenish and delicate. The leaf aroma is lot milder. Castleton is last year’s harvest – I don’t know whether that explains the mild aroma or the harvest season. Three minute steeping gave copper coloured liquid – the aroma was fairly mild again. The taste is much more mature compared to the first flush and there is a clear black tea taste here as well. When you let the tea cool down a couple of minutes the fruitiness becomes more pronounced. I think Castleton is a nice mix of strength and sweet fruit freshness and liveliness, although the muscatel notes are not very strong here – they’re there but more in the background. The taste is also surprisingly full-bodied and can take a drop of milk which I think nicely emphasises the fruitiness of this tea. Not bad at all!

Teeblogi: Lehtien luokituksessa on yksi kirjain lisää verrattuna edelliseen darjeelingiin – kirjainjonon ensimmäinen s, joka tarkoittaa lähteestä riippuen joka Specialia tai Superia. Löysin enemmän osumia Specialille, joten pitäydyn siinä. Mikä sitten tarkalleen on ero Special Finest Tippy Golden Flowery Orange Pekoen ja Finest Tippy Golden Flowery Orange Pekoen välillä on minulle hieman mysteeri, silmämääräisesti teessä on enemmän vihreitä kärkisilmuja, mikä sitten ehkä oikeuttaa lisämäärääseen Special. Lehdien tuoksu on verrattuna Margaret’s Hopeen ruohomaisempi ja terävämpi, tässä korostuu enemmän sitrusmaisuus kuin mausteisuus. Kun seuraa Théhuoneen suosittelemaa 1-1.5 min haudutusaikaa, niin tuloksena on juoma, jossa on hento muskatellirypäleen tuoksu, maku taas on yllättävän vahva tuoksuun nähden: rypäläinen ja mehukas, mukana on hiukkasen mukavaa kirpeyttä antamaan kokonaisuuteen särmää. Kokeilin taas myös pidempää kolmen minuutin haudutusta, joka antoi niin hyviä tuloksia Margaret’s Hopella – Singellillä se ei toiminut ollenkaan, juomassa oli kyllä hienon voimakas muskatellituoksu, mutta maku oli kitkerä, joten tämä tee ei selvästikään kestä pitkää hauduttamista. Kaiken kaikkiaan Singell on minusta mehukkuudessa, tuoreudessaan ja raikkaudessaan hyvin juotava tee, mutta ei kumminkaan yllä Margaret’s Hopen loisteliaisuuteen. Jostakin syystä tuli mieleen, että Singell voisi miellyttää erityisesti vihreän teen ystäviä.

Teeblogi says: There is an extra letter in the leaf grading compared to the previous Darjeeling, the initial S which stands for Special or Super depending on the source. I found more hits for Special so I am going to stick with it. What is the actual difference between Special Finest Tippy Golden Flowery Orange Pekoe and Finest Tippy Golden Flowery Orange Pekoe remains a slight mystery to me – this tea has more green tips so maybe that takes it up to the Special category. The leaf aroma is more grassy and sharp compared to Margaret’s Hope and the overall impression is more citrusy than spicy. When steeped according to the vendor’s recommended 1-1.5 minutes the result is a liquid that has a slight muscatel aroma and surprisingly strong taste compared to the aroma; juicy with a nice touch of astringency which adds a good sharpness to the overall picture. Again, I tried a longer three minute steep that gave such good results with Margaret’s Hope but here it didn’t work at all – the aroma with much more pronounced muscatel character was an improvement but the taste was bitter so this clearly a tea that can’t handle a longer soak. I think Singell is very drinkable in its juiciness and freshness but it doesn’t reach the spectacularity of Margaret’s Hope. For some reason I thought this might appeal specially to the lovers’ of green tea.

Théhuone: “Ihastuttavan pehmeä ja raikas ensipoiminnan Darjeeling-tee”, 12.80 €/100 g (128 €/kg)

Teeblogi: Levättyään talven yli Darjeelingin teepensaat tuottavat ensisatonsa keväällä, jonka poiminta tapahtuu helmikuun lopun ja huhtikuun puolenvälin välisenä aikana (satokausista/poiminnoista käytetään Intiassa nimitystä flush). Kevään ensipoiminta on satokausista maultaan kevein ja se tunnetaan raikkaasta kukkaisuudestaan. Margaret’s Hope on tämän vuoden satoa ja teen tuoreus tuntuu jo lehtien tuoksussa, joka on hienon mausteisen sitrusmainen. Kun lehdet laittaa lämmitettyyn teekannuun, niistä lähtee voimakas makean hedelmäinen tuoksu, joka antaa esimakua itse juomasta. Tee on väriltään kullankeltaista ja sen tuoksu ja maku vaihtelevat haudutusajan mukaan. Myyjä suosittelee 1-1.5 minuutin haudutusta, jolloin teessä korostuivat ruohomaiset aromit ja maut. Koska itse mielelläni kokeilen eri haudutusaikoja, päätin tutkia miten tämä tee kestäisi pidempää hauduttamista. Täytyy tunnustaa, että osa inspiraatiosta tuli Uptonilta ja itse Darjeelingissa sijaitsevalta Tea Emporiumilta, jotka antavat ensipoiminnan haudutusajoiksi 3-5 minuuttia. Kolmen minuutin haudutus tuotti teetä, jonka tuoksussa ja maussa korostuivat hedelmäiset vivahteet (lähinnä muskatellirypäleet) ja joka oli minusta juomana paljon miellyttävämpi ja mielenkiintoisempi kuin puolentoista minuutin haudutus. Tämän teen vahvin ominaisuus on sen eläväisyys ja elinvoimaisuus; sen tanssivassa raikkaudessa voi tosiaan tuntea keväisen luonnon koko voiman ja vehreyden. Luin jostain, että teen laadun voi päätellä siitä, minkälainen olo on teen nauttimisen jälkeen – Margaret’s Hopen täytyy olla hyvin korkealaatuista, sillä minulle tuli erittäin hieno ja energinen olo… Huipputee, jota voin suositella todella lämpimästi!

Teeblogi says: After being dormant the whole winter the tea bushes in Darjeeling come to life again in the spring and the first plucking is done between late February and mid-April (the pluckings are known in India as flushes). The first flush produces tea that has milder liquour than the other seasons. Margaret’s Hope is this year’s produce and you can sense the freshness already in the vibrant spicy citrus aroma of the leaves.  When you put the leaves in the warm teapot they release a strong sweet fruity aroma that gives an idea of the actual tea. The liquor has a golden yellow colour and its aroma and taste vary according to steeping time. The vendor recommends 1-1.5 minutes which emphasises the grassy character of this tea. As I like to experiment with various steeping times I wanted to investigate how Margaret would cope with a longer soak. I must confess I was partly inspired by Upton and Tea Emporium that recommend 3-5 steeping for first flush teas.  Three minute steeping produced tea that had a pronounced fruity (mainly muscatel) aroma and flavour and which I found more enjoyable and interesting than the shorter steep. I think the strongest characteristic of this tea is its liveliness – you can really feel the energy and life force of the spring in the tea’s dancing freshness. I read somewhere you can judge the quality of tea by how you feel after drinking it and Margaret’s Hope must be very high quality because I feel great and highly energetic… Recommended very warmly!

PS. Théhuone is a teashop in Helsinki. While it is a very fine shop they do not sell online – however as Margaret’s Hope is one of the most famous Darjeeling estates, readers living outside Finland should be able to get this tea easily elsewhere.
