Teeblogi: Täysin koneellisesti tuotettu CTC-tee on irtoteemaailman köyhä sukulainen – teekirjat puhuvat niistä vähemmän imartelevasti ja useimmat ns. paremmat teekaupat eivät pidä niitä valikoimissa ollenkaan. Poikkeuksen muodostaa Upton ja ostin tämän teen lähinnä lukuisten positiivisten asiakaskommenttien perusteella ja hyvä niin, sillä se oli todella miellyttävä yllätys. CTC-teetä käytetään paljon teepusseissa ja ne ovat suunniteltu antamaan väriä ja makua mahdollisimman nopeasti, joten tässä pätevät paljon lyhyemmät haudutusajat kuin normaalissa irtoteessä. Minun mielestäni puolitoista minuuttia antoi parhaan tuloksen – minuutti oli pikkuisen liian vähän ja kaksi minuuttia toi jo liikaa kitkeryyttä makuun. Mielenkiintoista tässä teessä on, että itsessään se ei ole kovin ihmeellistä, mutta kun lisää maitoa niin tuloksena loistavan täyteläinen, maltainen ja pehmeä juoma. Tämä ei mielestäni ole merkki heikkolaatuisesta teestä, joka “vaatii” maitoa ollakseen hyvää vaan kyseessä on teelaatu, joka on tarkoitettu maidon kanssa juotavaksi. Ennen kaikkea tässä eri Assameista koostuvassa sekoituksessa on paljon makua, joka ei ehkä ole kovin nyanssinen, mutta tasaisessa voimakkuudessaan erittäin miellyttävä. En tiedä sopiiko CTC-menetelmä erityisesti tälle teelle vai onko lehtiaines ollut alunperin korkealuokkaista ja se näkyy lopputuloksessa (teen nimestä päätellen veikkaisin jälkimmäistä), mutta käsitys, että CTC-tee on automaattisesti heikkolaatuista on selvästi väärä. CTC Fine Assam hakkaa pussiteet mennen tullen ja itse asiassa myös monta kokolehtistä irtoteelaatua. Suosittelen!

Teeblogi says: Wholly machine produced CTC-tea is the poor relation of the loose leaf tea world – generally looked down upon and most fine tea shops don’t stock them at all. The exception is Upton and I bought this tea based on the numerous positive customer comments. And they’re all true because this is a really nice!  CTC-leafs are used a lot in teabags and are designed to give colour and taste as quickly as possible so you the steeping times here are much shorter compered to whole leaf tea. I found out that one minute and a half gives the best results – one minute was slightly too little and two minutes was already pushing it as the tea started to get bitter. Interesting about this tea is that is nothing special by itself but when you add milk the result is a wonderfully full-bodied, malty and round cuppa. To me this is not a sign of inferior tea that “needs” milk to make it good but simply a tea that is meant to be taken with milk. All in all this Assam blend has a lot of taste – it might not be very multi-dimensional but it is very pleasant in its hearty strength. I don’t whether this type of tea is particularly suited to the CTC-process or the leaves were high quality in the first place and this shows in the end product (I suspect the latter given the name of tea) but the idea that CTC-tea is automatically of lesser quality is simply wrong. CTC Fine Assam beats easily any teabag and actually quite a few whole leaf teas as well. Recommended!

High Teas: “A classic malty and full-bodied tea…The liquor brews up to a hearty malty cup with a hint of raisin and a smooth finish”, £3.25/100g, £7.31/250g…£21.45/kg

Teeblogi: Assameita kuvataan usein sanoilla täyteläinen ja maltainen. Jälkimmäinen voi kenties aiheuttaa hämmennystä, sillä maltaista tulee usein ensimmäiseksi mieleen olut. Vaikka Assam tee ei maistu parhaalla mielikuvituksellakaan oluelta, on mielleyhtymä kuitenkin siinä mielessä oikea, että teen kohdalla maltaisuutta käytetään kuvaamaan tuoksua ja makua, josta tulee mieleen paahdetut jyvät ja niitähän ne olutmaltaatkin ovat. Vuorossa oleva Sessa on hyvä esimerkki maltaisuudesta, mikä ei ole suinkaan itsestäänselvyys kaikkien Assameiden kohdalla, mutta tässä sitä löytyy. Maltaisuuden pitäisi olla tunnusomaista erityisesti Assamin toisen satokauden laaduille (satokausia tai poimintoja kutsutaan Intiassa nimellä “flush”). Viljamielikuvat alkavat jo juoman tuoksusta, josta tulee mieleen paahtoleipä. Teen maku on pehmeä, täyteläinen, mutta samalla kumminkin yllättävän kevyt. Pidempään hauduttaessa maltaisuus tulee maussa vielä selvemmin esiin, jolloin Sessasta tulee jo niin täyteläinen, että se alkaa tuntua jollain tavalla “ruokaisalta”, säilyttäen samalla kumminkin keveytensä. Oikein mainiota maidon kanssa ja sopii hyvin aamiaiselle.

Teeblogi says: Assams are often described as full-bodied and malty. The latter may cause some confusion as malts are often associated with beer. While not even with the best of imaginations could you say that Assam tea tastes like beer, the connection is right in the sense that in tea the word malty is used to describe the aroma and taste reminiscent of toasted grains and that’s what the beer malts are as well. Today’s Sessa is a good example of maltiness, which not always present in Assams but this one has plenty of it. The maltiness is characteristic especially for the 2nd flush Assams (harvests or pickings in India are known as “flushes”). The grain connotations start already with the smell which reminds me of toast. The taste is smooth, full-bodied and surprisingly light at the same time. When steeped longer the maltiness becomes even more pronounced and the taste is so filling that Sessa starts in a way feel like a meal in itself – yet still being very light. Very nice with milk and well suited as a breakfast tea.

The Kent & Sussex Tea & Coffee Company: “A superior quality leaf tea great as a breakfast tea with that traditional powerful malty taste”, £2.40/125g, £4.50/250g…£13.15/kg

Teeblogi: Tämä tee oli todella miellyttävä yllätys. Teekaupan kuvaus kuulostaa aika tavanomaiselta eivätkä lehdetkään vaikuttaneet mitenkään erikoiselta – tummia, joissa on havaittavissa mieto hunajan tuoksu. Juomassa on hieno punaruskea väri ja mukavan maltainen tuoksu. Ensimaunkin perusteella kyseessä tuntui olevan aika tavalla perusassam, mutta parin nielaisun jälkeen alkoi tapahtua kummia. Yhtäkkiä suussa oli todella hieno ja monitahoinen aromi – täyteläinen, vahva, pyöreä, pehmeä mutta kumminkin samalla miellyttävällä tavalla hiukan kitkerä. Teessä on myös hyvin pitkä ja lämmin jälkimaku. Dikom on todellinen nautinto, joka saa ainakin minut erittäin hyvälle tuulelle. Kuppi tätä maidon kanssa (+ sokerin jos haluaa) aamulla, niin sitä on valmis mihin tahansa mitä päivän aikana voi tulla vastaan. Blogin paras tee tähän mennessä – ja myös halvin! Suosittelen lämpimästi.

Teeblogi says: What a wonderful surprise! The description sounded pretty ordinary and even the leaves didn’t promise anything special – they’re dark, with a faint honey smell. The liquid has a beautiful reddish brown colour and nice malty smell. The first sip also suggested an ordinary Assam but after a couple more strange things started to happen – all of a sudden the mouth was filled with this pleasant and complex taste – full-bodied, round, strong, soft yet at the same time pleasantly astringent. Dikom has also a long and warm aftertaste. This tea is a real treat that got me into a very good mood. It is a hugely satisfying and comforting drink. A mug of this with milk (+ sugar if desired) in the morning and you’ll be ready for anything the day ahead might throw at you. The best tea in this blog so far – and also the cheapest! Strongly recommended!

Jing Tea:  "Assam black tea with great body, flavour and richness", £2.90/50g, £13.05/250g... (£43.50/kg).

Teeblogi: Tämä oli elämäni ensimmäinen “Single Estate” Assam ja odotukset olivat korkealla. Lehdet ovat todella kauniita ja tuoksuvat hieman hunajaiselle. Teessä on hieno tumma, syvän punaruskea väri. Näin lupaavan alun jälkeen maku ei yltänyt ihan samalle tasolle. Tämä ei ole missään tapauksessa huono tee – maku on täyteläinen ja voimakas, mutta ei erityisen nyanssinen. Ei erityistä jälkimakua. Täytyy myös todeta, että tee ei ollut läheskään niin “maltaista” kuin odotin. Olen nyt juonut tätä teetä muutaman kerran ja tulokset ovat parantuneet. Olen ihan tyytyväinen, mutta en mitenkään erityisen ihastunut – etenkin kun ottaa huomioon hinnan.

Teeblogi says: This was my first Single Estate Assam ever and expectations were high. The leaves look beautiful and have a very nice smell with slight honey tones. The liquid has wonderful dark, deep reddish brown colour. Unfortunately, after such a promising start the taste wasn’t quite up there. This is not a bad tea by any means but for the price I was expecting a bit more. It is a solid and strong tea but a bit one-dimensional with no particular aftertaste. Hajua is also not as malty as I hope an Assam to be.  A couple of mugs later the results have improved and it is an alright tea but I’m still not overtly charmed by it.
