Upton Tea Imports: “High-grown Yunnan of excellent quality…Brisk flavor without the harsness of the lesser Yunnans”, $1/15g, $6.20/125g…$40.40/kg

Teeblogi: Tämä Yunnan lupasi paljon jo alusta lähtien. Lehdissä on erittäin miellyttävä, voimakas ja makea savuntuoksu, jossa on mukana selviä tupakka-aromeja (tupakantuoksuinen tee ei ehkä kuulosta kovin miellyttävältä, mutta kokonaisuutena tuoksu on hyvin hieno ja ainutlaatuinen). Haudutin teetä pakkauksen ohjeiden mukaan viisi minuuttia ja valmiissa juomassa oli syvä kuparinen väri, josta tuli mieleen ale- tai bitter-olut (nyt ehkä joku ajattelee: tuoksuu tupakalle, näyttää oluelle, miltähän se maistuu…). Teessä on loistava tuoksu – sama kuin lehdissä, mutta nyt vaan jalostuneemmassa muodossa. Maku on mieto, pehmeä ja mukavan savuinen. Jälkimaku on pitkä ja miellyttävä. Kaiken kaikkiaan tämä tuntuu erittäin “hienostuneelta” teeltä, jota en itse valitsisi aamiaiselle, vaan se sopii paremmin iltapäivään tai iltaan. Yleensäkin kiinalainen musta tee vaatii minusta ihan eri tavalla aikaa ja keskittymistä, niin paljon se eroaa tavallisemmasta intialaisesta tai Ceylon-teestä. Yunnan on erinomainen “teehetki-tee”, joka kutsuu rauhoittumaan ja maistelemaan. Vaikka se ei ole tapana Kiinassa, maku on tarpeeksi vahva kestääksen tilkan maitoa, mutta mielestäni tämä on parempaa ilman. Haudutin lehtiä neljä kertaa ja viimeisellä kerralla teessä oli tuskin enää mitään makua, vaikka väri oli vielä hyvä. Toisin kuin vihreässä tai oolong teessä, maku ei erityisemmin muuttunut eri haudutuskertojen välillä, vaan ainoastaan heikkeni vähitellen – ensimmäinen kuppi oli paras ja kolmaskin oli vielä nautittava. Elikkä kun on aikaa pysähtyä kolmen teekupin verran, niin Yunnan GFOP on erinomainen valinta. Suosittelen!

Teeblogi says: This Yunnan promised so much from the very start. The leaves have a pleasant, strong and sweet smokey smell with clear tobacco notes (tea that smells like tobacco might not sound that pleasant but as a whole the smell is very enjoyable and unique). I steeped it for five minutes as instructed and the liquid had a deep copper colour that reminded me of some ales or bitters (now maybe some of you might be thinking: smells like tobacco, looks like beer, wonder what it will taste like…). The smell is again wonderful – same as in the leaves, except in a more refined form. The taste is mild, soft and nicely smokey with a long and pleasant aftertaste. All in all this is a very “refined” tea – not necessarily a breakfast tea but more suited for afternoon or evening in my opinion. Generally I find that the Chinese black teas need more time and attention compared to the more familiar Indian or Ceylon teas – they are just so different. Yunnan makes a superb “tea-time tea” that calls for calm and thoughtful tasting. Although not customary in China, this tea has enough body so it can take a bit of milk but I think it’s better without. I steeped the leaves four times and the final steeping had hardly any taste left although the colour was still fine. Unlike the green and oolong teas which produce different flavours in different steepings I found the taste here stayed the same – it just got weaker. The first one was the best and the third one was still enjoyable. So when you have time to pause for a three cups of tea Yunnan GFOP makes an excellent choice. Recommended!

The Kent & Sussex Tea & Coffee Company: “A superior quality leaf tea great as a breakfast tea with that traditional powerful malty taste”, £2.40/125g, £4.50/250g…£13.15/kg

Teeblogi: Tämä tee oli todella miellyttävä yllätys. Teekaupan kuvaus kuulostaa aika tavanomaiselta eivätkä lehdetkään vaikuttaneet mitenkään erikoiselta – tummia, joissa on havaittavissa mieto hunajan tuoksu. Juomassa on hieno punaruskea väri ja mukavan maltainen tuoksu. Ensimaunkin perusteella kyseessä tuntui olevan aika tavalla perusassam, mutta parin nielaisun jälkeen alkoi tapahtua kummia. Yhtäkkiä suussa oli todella hieno ja monitahoinen aromi – täyteläinen, vahva, pyöreä, pehmeä mutta kumminkin samalla miellyttävällä tavalla hiukan kitkerä. Teessä on myös hyvin pitkä ja lämmin jälkimaku. Dikom on todellinen nautinto, joka saa ainakin minut erittäin hyvälle tuulelle. Kuppi tätä maidon kanssa (+ sokerin jos haluaa) aamulla, niin sitä on valmis mihin tahansa mitä päivän aikana voi tulla vastaan. Blogin paras tee tähän mennessä – ja myös halvin! Suosittelen lämpimästi.

Teeblogi says: What a wonderful surprise! The description sounded pretty ordinary and even the leaves didn’t promise anything special – they’re dark, with a faint honey smell. The liquid has a beautiful reddish brown colour and nice malty smell. The first sip also suggested an ordinary Assam but after a couple more strange things started to happen – all of a sudden the mouth was filled with this pleasant and complex taste – full-bodied, round, strong, soft yet at the same time pleasantly astringent. Dikom has also a long and warm aftertaste. This tea is a real treat that got me into a very good mood. It is a hugely satisfying and comforting drink. A mug of this with milk (+ sugar if desired) in the morning and you’ll be ready for anything the day ahead might throw at you. The best tea in this blog so far – and also the cheapest! Strongly recommended!

Olen unohtanut mainita, että blogin kuvia voi suurentaa klikkaamalla. Latasin juuri uudelleen kaikki kuvat ja nyt teelehtiä esittävät kuvat ovat selvästi isompia kuin valmista teetä esittävät kuvat. Tämä siksi, että “mukikuvan” päätehtävänä on näyttää juoman väri, joka näkyy selvästi jo pienemmässä koossa. Lehdissä on sen sijaan paljon yksityiskohtia, jotka tulevat paremmin esiin suuremmassa kuvassa. Klikkaamalla voit siis tarkastella lehtiä lähemmin ja tutustua teelehtien uskomattoman hienoon ja monimuotoiseen maailmaan. Yllä on asiasta esimerkkinä aikaisemmin arvostellun kiinalaisen vihreän teen Gu Zhang Mao Jianin lehtiä ennen ja jälkeen haudutuksen. Lehtien ulkonäössä on tärkeää tietoa myös siinä mielessä, että niiden väri ja koko kertovat paljon siitä minkälaista teetä niistä tulee. Väri on lähinnä sidoksissa teetyyppiin ja koko taas kertoo kauan teetä tulee haudattaa – mitä pienempiä lehdet ovat sitä nopeammin ne vapauttavat arominsa. Pienellä tarkoitetaan tässä lehtiä, jotka on pilkottu pieniksi. Kokonaiset teelehdet taas vaativat enemmän aikaa hautuakseen valmiiksi, mutta teen maku on usein parempi, koska eri aromiaineilla on enemmän aikaa liueta veteen ja tuloksena on monitasoisempi ja vivahteikkaampi juoma. Tästä johtuen “laatutee” on lähes poikkeuksetta tehty kokonaisista lehdistä.

I forgot to mention you can enlarge the photos by clicking them. I’ve just reloaded all the pics and now the leaf photos are much bigger than the mug/cup pics. The reason for this is that the main purpose of the “mug shots” (just couldn’t resist…) is to show the colour of the tea and this can be seen clearly already in a smaller picture. The leaves, on the other hand, have much detail that benefits from a bigger picture. So go on, click the photos and wonder the beautiful and incredibly diverse world of tealeaves! As a little taster, above are the earlier reviewed Chinese green tea Gu Zhang Mao Jian leaves before and after infusion. The leaves are important also in the sense that their colour and size have a direct connection with the type and quality of tea they produce. The colour tells you mainly the type and the size the quality. The size also determinates the infusion time – the smaller the leaves the quicker they release their flavours. By small I mean leaves that are broken.  Whole leaves, on the other hand,  need more time to infuse, but then the taste is often better, because all the different flavour components have plenty of time to develop resulting in a more complex overall taste. This is the reason why “fine” teas contains almost always only whole leaves.

Ajattelin vähän selventää teearvosteluiden pisteytyksiä. Jokainen tee saa siis kaksi eri arvosanaa – yhden yleispistemäärän asteikolla 1-100, joka kuvaa teetä kokonaisuutena, sen makua ja laatua. Lisäksi on vielä hinta-laatusuhde asteikolla 1-5, joka tuskin kaipaa enempää selittelyä. Olen hakenut inspiraatiota arvioimiseen Viini-lehden tavasta pisteyttää viinejä. Pisteet voi myös jakaa kymmenellä ja ajatella suunnilleen vanhoina kouluarvosanoina. Alla on vielä pisteet kuvailtuna sanallisesti. Lopuksi haluaisin vielä huomauttaa, vaikka se nyt luultavasti on itsestäänselvää, että pisteet (ja blogin teearvostelut yleensäkin) edustavat vain ja ainoastaan henkilökohtaista mielipidettäni ja makumieltymyksiäni.

I thought I’d clarify a bit the scores given in the tea reviews. Each tea gets two different marks – one general score on the scale of 1-100, which describes the overall taste and quality of the tea. The second score, “value for money” has a scale of 1-5 and should be pretty self-explanatory. The table below gives some idea how to interpret the different numbers. Finally I’d like to point out that the scores and tea reviews obviously represent my personal opinion and taste preferences only – what is my cup of tea (pun intended…) might not be somebody else’s and vice versa.

Teeblogi: Täytyy tunnustaa, että tiedän kovin vähän kenialaisesta tai yleensä afrikkalaisesta teestä. Toisin kuin intialaisista, kiinalaisista tai ceylonilaisista teelaaduista, joiden mausta minulla on selkeä mielikuva, ainoa asia mikä tulee mieleen kenialaisesta teestä on, että sitä käytetään paljon sekoituksissa ja teepusseissa sen edullisen hinnan takia, mutta en osaisi antaa minkäänlaista vastausta kysymykseen miltä maistuu tyypillinen kenialainen tee. No, asiaan tulee nyt muutos, sillä vuorossa on kenialainen Single Estate, joka on tietääkseni elämäni ensimmäinen puhdas afrikkalainen tee. Lehdissä on miellyttävä ja voimakas mustan teen aromi ja ne näyttävät vähän kahvinpuruille. Kapchorua on myös ensimmäinen CTC-tee, josta kirjoitan tässä blogissa. Lyhennys tulee sanoista Crush, Tear, Curl (revi, ruhjo, rullaa) ja viittää teen valmistusprosessiin. Nimi jo itsessään antaa aika selkeän kuvan miten lehtiä on käsitelty… En mene asiaan sen syvemmälle, koska aihe vaatii ihan oman postauksensa, mutta ero lehtien ulkonäössä on kyllä aika selvä verrattuna aikaisemmin arvosteltuihin ortodoksisen tuotantoprosessin teelaatuihin. Kapchoruassa on miellyttävä ja myös jotenkin tuttu maku. Tämä maistuu pussiteeltä! Tai maku on oikeastaan on yksi pussiteen maun osa-alue. Pusseissa on usein sekaisin monen eri maan teelatuja. Maku ei kumminkaan ole ollenkaan huono – täyteläinen, muttei raskas tai maltainen kuin Assam-teet. Pikemmminkin tässä yhdistyy Ceylonin raikkaus ja Assamin täyteläisyys. Erittäin virkistävä tee, joka toimii erinomaisesti janonsammuttajana. Uptonin mainitsemia hedelmä ja ruusuja en havainnut ja yleensäkin maku ei ollut mielestäni kovin vivahteikas. Kapchorua on kumminkin oikein mainio perustee, jota voi nauttia pitkin päivää – toimii oikein hyvin maidon ja sokerin kanssa.

Teeblogi says: I don’t really know much about Kenyan or African tea. I have a clear idea of different Indian, Chinese or Ceylon teas but only thing I can think of Kenyan tea is that it is used a lot in blends and teabags because it’s inexpensive. If somebody asked me to describe the typical taste of a Kenyan tea I couldn’t give an answer. Well, that’s about to change now, because today’s tea is a Single Estate Kenyan, which my first pure African tea, I think. The leaves have a pleasant and strong black tea smell and look a bit like ground coffee. Kapchorua is also the first CTC-tea in this blog. CTC is short for Crush, Tear, Curl and describes the manufacturing process. There is a slight hint in the name itself what the leaves have gone through. I’m not going to go into any more detail, since CTC is an excellent topic for a posting in itself but I think you agree the leaves look quite different compared to the Orthodox teas reviewed earlier. The taste is nice and somehow familiar – this tastes like a tea-bag tea! Or rather, it tastes like one part of tea bag tea. Tea bags contain often a mix of teas from several countries. It’s not a bad taste tho – full-bodied but not malty like an Assam. It’s more a combination of briskness of Ceylon and fullness of Assam. This is a very refreshing drink and an excellent thirst quencher. I didn’t taste the fruit and roses Upton mentioned and, all in all, didn’t find the taste very complex. But Kapchorua is a great all-around black tea that is easy to drink throughout the day. Works very well with milk and sugar.

Teeblogi: Tämä kiinalainen vihreä tee on oikein mielenkiintoinen tuttavuus. Lehdissä on hieno harmahtava väri ja makea, hedelmäinen tuoksu. Juoma on hailakan kultaista tai vihreää (tosin vihreä kuppini sai ehkä teen näyttämään vihreämmältä kuin se itse asiassa on…). Lehdistä saa helposti kolme haudutusta, jotka kaikki poikkesivat toisistaan. Ensimmäisessä korostui hedelmäisyys – tuoksu oli lähes rypälemäinen (tuli mieleen valkoviini) ja myös maku oli erittäin makea ja hedelmäinen, erityisesti persikka-aromit korostuivat -  ei minkäänlaista kitkeryyttä. En ole koskaan aikaisemmin juonut teetä, joka on luonnostaan näin makeaa. Toisessa haudutuksessa tuli esiin teen maku paljon selvemmin ja hedelmäisyys ei enää dominoinut. Tämä oli mielestäni paras haudutus – erittäin hieno ja monivivahteinen sekoitus teen luontaista kitkeryyttä ja hedelmäaromien makeutta. Nyt tuli esiin myös miellyttävä ja raikas jälkimaku. Kolmas haudutus oli kaikista miedoin – nyt hedelmät olivat kokonaan poissa ja jäljellä oli vain mieto vihreän teen maku. Tämä haudutus oli parhaimmillaan hieman jäähtyneenä, toisin kuin ensimmäinen haudutus, joka oli miellyttävintä kuumana. Tämä oli ensimmäinen “hieno” vihreä teeni – yleensäkin juon lähinnä mustaa teetä, mutta tämän perusteella kyllä odotan innolla tutustumista muihin laatuihin. Ja lopuksi, jos joku ihmetteli: en välttämättä juo vihreää teetä aina vihreästä kupista…

Teeblogi says: A very interesting Chinese green tea. The leaves have a beautiful greyish colour and sweet, fruity smell. The infusion has a light golden/green colour (although maybe my green mug made it look more green than it actually is…). This tea gives you easily three steepings – each with their own individual character. The first one was very fruity. The tea had a sweet smell, which made made me think of grapes and white wine. Also the flavour was very sweet and fruity, plenty of peach notes here and no bitterness at all. This is the naturally most sweet tea I’ve ever tasted – the first infusion really was incredibly sweet. The second infusion had more “tea-taste” and the fruits were not playing the main part anymore. This was my favourite infusion – a beautiful and complex mixture of the natural astringency of tea and sweetness of the fruit notes. There was also a clean and fresh aftertaste. The third infusion was the mildest – the fruit was gone and the liquid had only a mild green tea taste, which improved when the tea had cooled down quite a bit. The first infusion was exactly the opposite – I liked it better when it was hot. This was my first “fine” green tea – I usually drink black tea but based on this I’m looking forward to trying other green teas. And finally, in case somebody is wondering – no, I don’t always drink green tea from a green mug….

Teeblogi: Tämä oli elämäni ensimmäinen “Single Estate” Assam ja odotukset olivat korkealla. Lehdet ovat todella kauniita ja tuoksuvat hieman hunajaiselle. Teessä on hieno tumma, syvän punaruskea väri. Näin lupaavan alun jälkeen maku ei yltänyt ihan samalle tasolle. Tämä ei ole missään tapauksessa huono tee – maku on täyteläinen ja voimakas, mutta ei erityisen nyanssinen. Ei erityistä jälkimakua. Täytyy myös todeta, että tee ei ollut läheskään niin “maltaista” kuin odotin. Olen nyt juonut tätä teetä muutaman kerran ja tulokset ovat parantuneet. Olen ihan tyytyväinen, mutta en mitenkään erityisen ihastunut – etenkin kun ottaa huomioon hinnan.

Teeblogi says: This was my first Single Estate Assam ever and expectations were high. The leaves look beautiful and have a very nice smell with slight honey tones. The liquid has wonderful dark, deep reddish brown colour. Unfortunately, after such a promising start the taste wasn’t quite up there. This is not a bad tea by any means but for the price I was expecting a bit more. It is a solid and strong tea but a bit one-dimensional with no particular aftertaste. Hajua is also not as malty as I hope an Assam to be.  A couple of mugs later the results have improved and it is an alright tea but I’m still not overtly charmed by it.

Moi ja tervetuloa Teeblogiin! Minun nimeni on Kari ja päätin aloittaa bloggaamisen kun monivuotinen suosikkini PG Tips loppui ja ajauduin teekriisiin. Nykyisellä asuinpaikkakunnallani ei ko merkkiä myydä ja katsastettuani markettivalikoiman ymmärsin, että tilanne vaatii horisontin laajentamista. Aloin etsiä teetä netistä ja sitähän löytyi! Olen juonut teetä lapsesta asti, silloin tällöin haudutettua teetä, mutta 98 % pussiteetä. Nyt löytämäni irtoteelaatujen runsaus heittää kumminkin pussit sivuosaan ja ajattelin alkaa ihan tosissaan tutustua eri irtoteelaatujen maailmaan. Blogin tarkoituksena on kutsua muutkin mukaan tälle matkalle ja samalla toimia itselle muistiinpanoina maistamistani teelaaduista.

Ajattelin aluksi blogata ihan vain suomeksi, mutta nopea haku suomalaiseen teekulttuuriin herätti pelon, että lukijakuntani voisi jäädä kovin pieneksi. Päinvastoin kuin kahvi, tee ei vaan ole Suomessa kovin iso juttu (vielä – maailmalla on meneillään teebuumi, joka toivottavasti saapuu myös pian meille). Tästä syystä Teeblogi on kaksikielinen. Toivottavasti tämä ei liikaa haittaa lukemista – olen koettanut erottaa eri kielet selkeästi toisistaan.

Hello and welcome to Teeblogi, A Finnish Tea Blog partly in English! My name is Kari and I decided to start this blog when I ran out of my longtime favourite teabag PG Tips and found myself in tea crisis. PG Tips are not available in the town where I live at the moment and after checking out the offerings at local supermarkets I realised I needed to widen my horizons. I started to look for tea on the internet and…found plenty! I’ve been drinking tea since I was a child and I go easily through 5-6 mugs a day but it’s tea bags 98 of % the time. Things are going to change now though – the huge selection and variety available online will put the teabag out of the spotlight and I will start sampling different kinds of loose leaf tea. The idea of this blog is to share my discoveries with you, dear readers – but also to function as a notebook for myself of the teas I’ve tasted.

At first I was planning to blog in Finnish only but after some thinking I started to get worried I might not have that many readers. Finland has a population of only 5 million and while the annual 12 liter coffee consumption ranks as no. 1 in the world (!), tea just isn’t part of the Finnish psyche anywhere near the same way (annual consumption is just 0.3 kgs). Maybe it’s bit like cheese in China – I’m sure there are a few enthuasists but it’s hardly a national obsession. Hence this blog is bilingual. I hope the different languages don’t make reading too hard, I’ve tried to separate them clearly. Not all content is in English but most things will be. All tea reviews are definitely in English – you can find them under the “In English” category in the right sidebar but also by clicking the different region/tea/shop name categories (eg. Assam, Keemun, Jing Tea).
